The Best of the New Shows of the Fall 2012 Season

It is my favorite time of the year! The NEW fall season is here. The time of the year where the television audience has all the power, the power to decide what gets picked up or cancelled.  So it’s important to remind ourselves that with great power comes great responsibility. We have the power to create the next Lost, Modern Family, or Big Bang Theory. Deep breathe!

Okay, so what should you be filling your DVR with? What shows are going to be the topic of conversation the next day at the office? Which characters will you love or love to hate? Below are my top five picks for this fall season:

1.  The Mindy Project (FOX) 9:30pm on Tuesdays
One the most talked about new shows this fall season, Ms. Mindy Kaling of The Office stars in and created this rom-com world of a quirky OB-GYN who decides to “revamp” her social life and love life. Think: Bridget Jones mixed in with Scrubs with an Indian twist.

2.  Nashville (ABC) 10pm on Wednesdays
The premiere date is set for October 10th, but based on the casting alone, Nashville has winner written all over it. Connie Britton, from American Horror Story, stars as a fading country star whose manager team decides to have her go on tour with an up-and-coming singer casted as Hayden Panettiere. Think: A television version of Country Strong, but way juicier.

3.  666 Park Avenue (ABC) 10pm on Sundays
I would be lying if I said the Lostie inside of me was more excited about Terry O’Quinn returning to my television screen than the actual show itself, however, 666 definitely tugs on my curiosity strings that have long since cob-webbed. It looks full of supernatural elements and the characters seem mysterious and ruthless. Vanessa Williams helps round out this well casted show.

4.  Elementary (CBS) 10pm on Tuesdays
Yes, it’s another Sherlock Holmes reboot, but don’t write it off just yet. Johnny Lee Miller plays Sherlock, a recovering addict and who works as a consultant for the NYPD. And Lucy Liu plays Watson who is his sober-living companion. The on-screen chemistry will probably be the thing to hook you in if you’re not a Sherlock Holmes addict. Think: Law & Order SVU mixed with Monk.

5.  Arrow (The CW) 8pm on Wednesdays
Not a big comic-book fan and the CW and I “broke up” once One Tree Hill started to suck, but Arrow could be the show to bring a new audience to the network. Based on the DC Comic, the Green Arrow, Oliver Queen is a wealthy playboy by day and crime fighter by night, returning to take down his father’s enemies. There are twists and turns to captivate audiences. Think: Revenge, Smallville, and Gossip Girl blended with Salt.

No mention of Homeland, Boardwalk Empire, or Walking Dead?

    • Lucy Britain

None of the shows you listed are “new.” Duh!

  • Lola

I’m so skeptical of “The Mindy Project.” I haven’t gotten around to see the pilot but I must admit I cringe whenever I see the commercials for it.
