Back in May, the fashionista we all know and love, Jessica Simpson, gave birth to a baby girl, Maxwell Drew Johnson. As expected, the public was eager to set their eyes on the newest celebrity tot. This past week, Simpson made her first post-baby appearance on Katie Couric’s new daytime talk show, Katie, which aired on Monday. Everyone was especially excited for this appearance because they wanted to see how Simpson had been progressing with her Weight Watchers deal (which is rumored to be worth $4 million). Simpson had gained a total of 70 pounds during her pregnancy and as she walked out onto the Katie stage, she revealed that she had lost over 40 pounds. That wasn’t the shocker though. Apparently, the real shocker came when Simpson shared a photo of her 4 month old baby girl in a “bikini.”
The Huffington Post reports, “The crowd ‘awed,’ but the picture of Simpson’s baby in a bikini was criticized by Internet users as well as a British child welfare charity.” Seriously? First off, who calls a bathing suit that a child wears a bikini? Wouldn’t you say the baby is in a bathing suit? I believe the media is the one sexualizing this baby, not Simpson, her mother.
Claude Knights, director of the child welfare charity Kidscape, said, ”It is very disturbing to see a young baby presented to the world wearing a bikini. Celebrity choices carry great influence, as can be seen by the manner in which their accessories and manners are copied widely.”
This brings up another point, why are celebrities held to such high standards? Who is to say that Jessica Simpson is our role model? Just because she is a celebrity does not mean she is who people look up to. Even so, what the hell is wrong with putting your baby in a bathing suit? It’s a cute photo and the fact that this has even been brought up as an issue, goes to show people have way too much time on their hands. There are bigger things to worry about, people!
The International Business Times also reported, “Tanith Carey, a writer for Britain’s Daily Mail, said Simpson showed poor judgment. In an article titled — ‘What kind of mother parades her baby on TV in a string bikini?’ — Carey wrote that she initially felt sympathy for Simpson when she watched the episode, but calls the photo ‘creepy’ and ‘disturbingly adult.’”
This seriously kills me inside. “Disturbingly adult?” How do I even respond to that comment? It’s a baby! Mother’s dress up their babies in cute bathing suits all the time! Personally, I find it “creepy” that there is even a debate about this.
What do you think of the photo Simpson shared? Do you think it’s inappropriate? Comment below.
