Must Watch Fall TV: The New Normal

Well, it’s official, fall is finally here and that signifies something very important: television season premieres are upon us.  This means reuniting with old friends after the summer as well as making a few new ones.  The roommates and I recently made the prudent decision to finance a new 40” LED TV for our apartment and I fully intend to devote several hours a week in order to stay current with the overhaul of new premieres.  It’s going to be difficult to balance with my hectic work week, but nonetheless, I will slave tirelessly in order to bring you the best of the best this fall season.  I am such a hard worker.

“Abnormal is the New Normal”

Let me start with a new player in the game: The New Normal.  O.M.G. I absolutely love this show.  The show is about a fabulous gay couple, Bryan and David, and their desire to have a child.  They finally find the perfect surrogate mother with Goldie, a young single mother who recently moved from Ohio to LA to start her life over with her daughter Shania.  I fell in love with the whole cast immediately, even Goldie’s bigoted, racist grandmother, Jane.  Between the writing and the acting, The New Normal is a homerun, delivering consistently sharp and witty humor without ever going over the top or sacrificing sentiment.

One of the things I really admire about this show is the fact that it is completely centered around an “alternative lifestyle” couple.  Bryan is the melodramatic, fashion-forward of the two, David being the level-headed rock in the relationship.  The two are absolutely adorable and their chemistry is undeniable.  The sitcom doesn’t ignore the prejudice and ignorance that comes with the territory, but instead addresses it very honestly.  There’s nothing to fear though, the show never gets too sappy, always alleviated by snappy one-liners, or in many cases, the eccentric and outspoken Jane.  She has something to say about everything and everyone and is anything but politically correct.  Her ridiculous and extreme character is so funny, you may not even realize how many people she has offended in a single sentence.

This show is hard not to adore, trust me.  This is one of those shows that reminds you why we love sitcoms so much.  Tune in Tuesdays at 9:30/8:30c on NBC to watch The New Normal and watch a trailer below in the meantime:
