When you live in New York, you’re literally crossing paths with hundreds of people on a daily basis. You encounter fellow New Yorkers waiting for your morning coffee, on the subway during your commute to and from work, and of course, when you’re out having fun and sipping cocktails with your girls. In a city with so many inhabitants, it’s inevitable that you will find someone attractive—and if you’re gutsy enough, perhaps you’ll greet that person, start off a conversation and maybe, even get their number.
But what happens to all of the people that you lock eyes with during a quick New York minute and never see again?
There’s always the option of posting up the encounter on Craigslist in the “Missed Connections” section, in hopes of being contacted by the other person. But let’s be honest—what are the chances of actually stumbling upon a post that was written about you? Now, there’s a new way to express your desire for that person you didn’t get to talk to, but wished that you had. An organization called I Wish I Said Hello, founded by Lisa Park and Adria Navarro is giving people the opportunity to express their missed connection and post it up in the location where it occurred in the form of street art.
Sounds pretty romantic if you ask me.
According to their website, the goal of the project isn’t necessarily to have to a reconnect occur, but rather to celebrate “everyday poetics, a physical mapping of a digital network, a commentary on the role of technology in human communication.” What is truly remarkable about the project is the way it brings people back to the place where their missed connection happened, instead of simply posting it up online. It makes the project more meaningful, and it probably increases the chances of reconnecting.
The project cannot continue without participants, so if you fell in love at first sight with someone sitting across from you on the train, now’s your chance to share it with the rest of New York! Here’s what you have to do:
- Download the template you have to fill out. It can be found here: http://iwishisaidhello.org/participate/
- Write about your own experience or find one on Craiglist. In a few words, describe your encounter. Every word counts so make sure you choose ones that will resonate with people!
- Print it out!
- Illustrate the scenario.
- Head on over to where you locked eyes with that beautiful stranger and stick it!
Hope you all get a chance to participate in the project—I certainly will! In the meantime, feel free to share some of your missed connections with us. Who was that stranger that got away?
