Just like everyone else these days, I’m into food, and therefore, I enjoy mindlessly watching endless streams of food shows. Like, who doesn’t love watching food? I’m into food. It’s not something you can avoid or even hate. And if you do hate it, you must have incredible willpower or are certifiably insane.
Yesterday, I was casually perusing the Vice website searching for other good stuff once their literary superstar ‘drugs and pills’ columnist, Cat Marnell, ends her column, Amphetamine Logic for good (she’s an incredible writer, don’t miss out). Despite being somewhat indifferent to most of Vice’s charms, I have always been impressed by Vice’s videos, for instance, the suicide forest in Japan, and coverage on drug wars. Check them out. I’m not part of Vice’s core demographic , so it surprised me to find out that they even have stuff for the utterly mundane glutton, like myself.
Thanks to Joanna Fuertes-Knight’s show, Girl Eats Food, my penchant for gluttony has found an outlet. This could be the greatest thing since sliced bread, or it could be that I’m just that impressed a Filipina-English hipster just made the traditional Filipino dish dinuguan (blood stew, to you!), and a Filipino via was of an English-y pudding dessert that’s made of the traditional ube (purple yam) ingredient. Wow! I’ve never made an English style pudding, but I love ube and ube anything is in my good books. She’s lovely, a bit gross, and self-depreciating but she’s still charming for all that.
As a full-blooded second gen Filipina, I can totally appreciate it when she makes traditional Filipino food with a sense of humor and a bit of a twist. In one episode, Lingerie Longanisa, she makes longanisa, a caseless sausage, by way of nylon stockings. Count me impressed. Armed with her stocking technique, I’m confident I can make one and it won’t be hard at all. Watching her off-beat techniques and tips, the unthinkable now seems pretty possible.
She also makes some other stuff. You can watch her make full English breakfast cupcakes and some kind of savory cheesecake. You owe it to yourselves to check out her videos – she’s entertaining and the full English cupcakes even have meat in them! The savory cheesecake gives me the runs just watching her make it. I don’t know if I’ll make every one of her recipes, but she manages to sate my gluttonous food watching appetite.
