Homemade Super Shine Hair Booster
Summertime for me is not complete without days of basking in the sun’s warm rays and cooling off with a dip in a pool or beach. As blissful as this may be, my hair does not find as much enjoyment in these activities as I do. Although we are just a few short weeks into the season, the heat, salt water and chlorine have already left my hair dull, brittle and lackluster. Perhaps it was the extra time on my hands during vacation or the fact that I happen to come across an inexpensive remedy in comparison to all of the overpriced hair treatments out there, but today I decided to give a homemade hair mask a try.
A few weeks ago, Birchbox posted an article entitled 4 DIY Beauty Treatments for Foodies, and I felt as if they were speaking right to me so I decided to pin it for future reference. Lucky for me, I was able to refer back to it today when inspiration hit and I remembered the article included a recipe for the exact treatment I needed. I gathered the ingredients for the Super Shine Booster Avocado Hair Mask and followed the recipe’s directions. I applied the hair mask as directed and waited 10 excruciating minutes (the mixture of ingredients that do not normally go together did not provide the most pleasant smell). I then showered, shampooing twice, scrubbing vigorously each time, and conditioning. However, when I got out of the shower, I still had tiny banana particles in my hair! Off to the shower I returned, shampooing again, and brushing with a fine tooth comb to make sure I got everything out. This time I did, but I was beginning to wonder if the results were going to be worth the effort!
The final verdict: I have extremely curly hair and after blow drying, I noticed that my hair no longer looks dull, but rather has some added shine. The most noticeable difference is the way it feels: my hair has returned to the silky smooth and super soft state that I am used to. I definitely got the results I was looking for, and I recommend the treatment but I am forewarning: it took quite a bit of time and work!
Below is the recipe for the avocado hair mask I used, and don’t forget to check out Birchbox for additional homemade beauty treatments including a skin revitalizer, an oil-fighting face scrub, and a body exfoliating grapefruit coconut scrub.
Super Shine Booster: Avocado Hair Mask
Ingredients: 1 ripe avocado, 2-3 tablespoons olive oil, 1 banana, 1 egg (omit if you are vegan)
Recipe: Pour all ingredients into a blender and puree until the mixture has a chunk-free, cake-batter consistency. Apply one quarter of the mask to dry hair and leave in for 10 minutes. Rinse, shampoo, and style as normal. Place leftover hair mask in fridge for additional applications.
