Elena Lincoln, semi-jokingly referred to as Mrs. Robinson by Anastasia Steele, plays an extremely important role in the Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy. She is Christian’s mother’s married older friend, an unhappy housewife, and the woman responsible for seducing Christian Grey at the tender age of fifteen. In fact, it is Mrs. Robinson who introduced Christian to the world of BDSM by making him her submissive and one of the many reasons that Mr. Grey is “fifty shades of fucked up.”
While talk of casting predominantly centers on Christian and Anastasia, choosing the right actress to play the role of Mrs. Robinson is equally important. Mrs. Robinson, despite no longer having a sexual relationship with Christian, serves as one of Christian’s few confidants, often causing tension between him and Ana. The actress that portrays Mrs. Robinson must exude sex appeal, wealth and a touch of desperation (after all, what other word would describe a woman that seduces a teenager?). She must also have the ability to bring to life Mrs. Robinson’s bitchiness and capacity to intimidate. Here are our nominations for the role of Mrs. Robinson (clockwise from top left):
Melinda Clarke – Clarke has portrayed two ends of the spectrum, first starring in the television series The O.C. as Julie Cooper and marrying a much older character, Caleb Nichol, played by Alan Dale. More recently she played herself on Entourage, and seduced a young Eric Murphy, played by Kevin Connolly. Currently she stars in the CW’s Nikita.
Kim Cattrall – Best known as Samantha Jones on HBO’s Sex and the City, Catrall is no stranger to playing the role of a sexual predator. She also starred in Meet Monica Velour, an indie flick about a washed-up porn star who seduces a younger boy.
Elizabeth Hurley – Hurley has starred in movies such as Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Bedazzled, and Serving Sara. She currently plays Giana Payne on the CW television series, Gossip Girl.
Michelle Pfeiffer – With award-worthy performances in movies such as Scarface, What Lies Beneath, Dangerous Minds, One Fine Day, and Batman Returns, Pfeiffer has proven time and time again that she has the talent. We’ve also seen her play the role of seductress; however, out of all our nominees, I think in my head, she looks the least like Mrs. Robinson.
Other names being thrown around by fans of the trilogy include Diane Lane, Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Madonna, Demi Moore, and Julianne Moore. However, are any of these names THE Mrs. Robinson? I find myself having an easier time casting both Christian and Ana than I do this character. Going through all these actress’ names, none seems to fit the bill perfectly for one reason or another: too obvious, too famous, too old, too young, too highly regarded, and just plain can’t picture it. Time will tell who the producers, director, and E L James herself will choose. Perhaps they will even decide to go with a new face. In the meantime, vote for your favorites below and tell us who you picture as Elena Lincoln, AKA Mrs. Robinson.
