AWKWARD. The Show You Should Be Watching.

MTV has a little gem on their station in the form of Jenna Hamilton. She is the star of the original series AWKWARD., which speaks to the inner high school girl inside of all of us Renegade Chicks. Not literally inside, figuratively speaking.

The series is premiering its sophomore season this Thursday at 10:30pm. And in true MTV fashion, it is re-running the first season 24/7. It is my secret obsession. I love it.

Why may you ask? What makes AWKWARD. different from any other teen high school drama?

In my opinion, the characters are genuine. They allow themselves to be vulnerable in those typical high school moments. It makes the show relatable. Jenna is honest with her feelings and I cannot help but be jealous of her fearlessness. Compared to the failed MTV scripted-series, this one doesn’t try to be overly-sexed, partied, drugged out, and there are no vampires or werewolves. A big plus in my book.

Creator and executive producer Lauren Iungerich told the Hollywood Reporter, “Yeah, there’s no source material for this, my own head, my awkward experiences as a teenager,” she joked. “I think as a writer, you write about things you know. There’s a lot of truth in this… things that happened to me.”

Iungerich continued with, “I spent a lot of time with teenagers when I was developing this show,” then added. “I went back to my old high school and spoke to about 40 of them, asked them about a hundred inappropriate questions, which they all answered, because what kid doesn’t like to talk about themselves?”

A brief synopsis of Season One of AWKWARD.: the main character, fifteen year old Jenna Hamilton, gets an anonymous letter that basically calls her a “pussy” and tells her to “get a life.” This leads to a total misunderstanding about an accident which everyone believes was her attempt to commit suicide. So now she is a social outcast amongst her peers, the school bitch is making her life a living hell, her mother is driving her crazy, oh, and there is a crazy yet, funny guidance counselor. Jenna is also in the middle of a love triangle between the super hottie, Mattie, and the ‘perfect, nice’ guy, Jake.  Its juicy stuff.

Personally, I’m Team Mattie. I think Jake would annoy the crap out of me. Also, there’s swearing in every episode so don’t be shocked if you hear some without the beeps.
