50 Shades of Grey: Book One

Let me start off by saying that I’m not into BDSM, in fact, I didn’t even really know what that meant until I read “50 Shades of Grey” by E.L. James. BDSM stands for bondage, domination, submission, and masochism. Sounds pretty intense, right?  Well, the truth is, it’s intense and dark, but overall the book is a love story. The plot revolves around recent college grad, Anastasia Steele, and the wealthy and disturbed businessman, Christian Grey. When they first meet, Anastasia is an innocent virgin instantly drawn to Christian’s dashing good looks.  As their relationship blossoms, she yearns to find out more about who he is. Eventually, his darker side is revealed; he is extremely dominant and wants her to be his submissive sexual partner and do whatever he says behind closed doors including some painful acts.

Early on in the relationship, Christian comes up with a very detailed contract for Anastasia to sign in order to solidify their sexual (BDSM) relationship.  Of course, Anastasia is extremely torn with this decision she has to make, as any normal person would be. What price will she pay to be with the one and only man she has ever loved and shared an intimate relationship with? Though he fulfills all of her sexual desires, she can’t help but want more. Can they both make it work? This is the question that I need to know the answer to!

The author, E.L. James does an excellent job of easing both the reader and main character, Ana, into this relationship. James made me care about both the characters which is why I was unable to put the book down all week. I found myself oddly rooting for this relationship to somehow work even though it may not be in the best interest for either person. The book is riveting from beginning to end and some of the erotic details will definitely make you blush! If you’re looking to read a book written by a literary genius, sadly this is not the book for you, but if you’re looking for a fascinating page turner, then this is the trilogy for you! I am currently on the second book and can’t wait to find out more about this complex man who is Christian Grey. Happy Reading :)
