Around 9am this morning, shots were fired at the Empire State Building. Two people are now dead, and police believe one of them to be the suspected shooter, 53-year-old Jeffrey Johnson. Eight other people have been wounded and are currently at Bellevue Hospital. As someone who lives in NYC and works just blocks away from the Empire State Building, this is pretty scary. I also know people who work in the Empire State Building and police have been swarming the premises for the last couple of hours.
After the incident this morning, Mayor Bloomberg addressed the city:
“Earlier this morning, a man who had been fired from his job about a year ago began shooting. He killed one person, at least nine shot. Some may have been accidentally shot by the police.
I ask everyone to keep victims in their thoughts. This is a terrible tragedy, and it would be no doubt more tragic without the heroic acts of the policemen. Every day, the police put their lives on the line to save lives bravely.
NYC is the safest big city in the country, but we are not immune to the national problem of gun violence. This is the beginning of an investigation. Two are dead — the perpetrator and his victim. He does not appear to have a criminal record [at this time]. We’re just starting this investigation.”
We’ll keep you updated on the situation. Stay tuned for more information.
Jeffrey Johnson, 58, was laid off about a year ago from Hazan Imports and even though a year had passed, he was still upset and had the intentions of shooting a specific co-worker, Steven Ercolino, a vice president at Hazan Import. Johnson killed Ercolino, one other and himself – all others have no life-threatening injuries. Watch the video below for more information.
